Wedding Invitation Wording: A Gentle Guide (with Examples)

Everafterly wedding invitations arranged with a wax seal and greenery

Your invitation wording sets the tone before a single guest arrives. Here is a simple framework — and a few examples — to help you find words that sound like the two of you.

Start with who is hosting

Traditionally the hosts’ names come first. Today most couples choose a warm, inclusive line such as “Together with their families”. If parents are hosting, you might write “Mr and Mrs Smith invite you to the wedding of their daughter”.

The request line

“Request the pleasure of your company” is classic for a non-religious venue; “request the honour of your presence” is often used for a ceremony in a place of worship. Relaxed alternatives: “would love you to celebrate with us”.

Dates and times

Formal invitations write the date in words — “Saturday, the twentieth of March, two thousand and twenty-seven”. Our editor can do this for you automatically. For modern designs, “Saturday 20 March 2027 at 3.30 pm” is perfectly elegant.

RSVPs, dress code and children

Keep the invitation itself uncluttered and move details to a separate card or your animated invitation’s details section: RSVP date, dress code, gifts and whether the celebration is adults-only.

Three examples

  • Classic: Together with their families, Amelia Grace and James Edward request the pleasure of your company at the celebration of their marriage.
  • Modern: Amelia & James are getting married — and we’d love you to be there.
  • Relaxed: Come eat, drink and dance with us as we say “I do”.
